24.05.09: Olympic Marina (Lavrion) > Voufalo ( N. Evvoia), 38,7 NM, 08H00-15H45.

Mooi en rustig weer voor deze 38 mijl lange tocht langs de zuidwest kust van Evia. Het grote, langwerpige eiland dat vrij dicht langs de oostkust van het Griekse vasteland ligt en zich van NW naar SE uitstrekt, hebben we nooit bezocht. Onze enige stop ooit was in Chalkis, de hoofdplaats, waar we naar het kolkende water keken dat zich onder de smalle brug wringt. Morgen moeten we er langs ... Er zijn hier vóór Chalkis niet echt goede havens zodat de bestemming voor vandaag de ankerplaats bij het dorpje Voufalo is. De golf van zuid-Evia kan erg winderig zijn en het een kleine boot erg lastig maken in een korte gehakte zee maar vandaag hebben we daar gelukkig geen last en onze voortgang is dan ook probleemloos. Voufalo. Als we ons anker in de vroege namiddag in 6m water laten vallen in het NW van de kleine baai( een wrak maakt het moeilijk meer oostelijk te liggen), is het bij dit warme weer tijd voor een - eerste - duik. Eric gaat even het anker controleren: een meevaller want het zit goed vast ingegraven in het zand - er is hier veel wier wat geen goed houden waarborgt. De vrij gesloten baai wordt in beide Pilots als een veilige ankerplaats opgegeven: het is hier erg rustig en aangenaam. Op de hoge bergruggen draaien heel wat windmolens maar als we de Pilots mogen geloven valt het met valwinden wel mee. 's Avonds gaan we samen met Wil en Jeanine van Windswept, lekkere gavros met sla en tsaziki eten in de enige taverna die hier open is.

Beau temps calme pour les 38 milles le long de la côte SW de l'île d'Eubée. Nous n'avons jamais encore visité cette grande île longiforme située à proximité du continent et qui s'étend de NW à SE. Notre seul arrêt fut un jour à Chalkis, le chef-lieu, où du pont nous avons vu l'eau bouillonner par l'etroit passage. Demain c'est nous qui devons passer là ... Il n'y a pas vraiment de bons ports avant Chalkis: notre destination est donc le mouillage réputé assez sûr près du village de Voufalo. Le golfe du sud de l'Ebée est réputé assez venteux et est en mesure de rendre la navigation dans une mer hachée hardue pour un petit bateau mais aujourd'hui heureusement nous n'avons pas de soucis à nous faire et notre progression s'effectue donc sans problèmes. Voufalo. Quand en début d'après-midi nous mouillons dans 6m d'eau dans le NW de la petite baie - une épave rend le mouillage risqué plus à l'est -, voici venue enfin l'heure de la première baignade. Eric va contrôler la tenue de notre ancre: une chance, car l'ancre a une bonne prise dans le sable , alors qu'ici il y a beaucoup d'herbe ce qui n'offre qu'une tenue médiocre. La baie est mentionnée comme sûre dans les deux pilotes; l'endroit ne manque pas de charme ni de quiétude. Sur les hauteurs des crêtes de grandes éoliennes tournent calmement et à en croire les pilotes il ne faut pas se faire trop de soucis pour les vents qui pourraient débouler des flancs de collines. Nous allons souper avec Wil et Jeanine de Windswept, dans la seule taverne où l'on sert ce soir, nous mangeons de délicieux gavros - ces petits poissons frits -, une salade grecque - la choriatiki - et de la tsaziki - yaourt de concombres, aïl et huile d'olives. Il n'y a pas d'autres yachts mais quelques tables encore sont occupées par de Grecs et les occupants d'un campingcar ont trouvé ici une halte idéale pour la nuit.

Nice and calm weather for the 38 NM trip along the SW coast of Evia. We never have explored this large and long-limbed island situated in the vicinity of the continent, spread from NW to SE. Our only stop, one day, was at Chalkis, the county town, where we saw from the bridge the water running through the narrow passage. Tomorrow we'll have to pass there ... There are no real good harbours before Chalkis: so our destination is the as a good shelter known anchorage near the village of Voufalo. The southern part of the gulf of Evia is known as rather windy and is able to make navigation difficult in short seas for a small boat but today we don't have to worry and we can progress without problems. Voufalo. When we anchor in the early afternoon in 6m water in the NW of the small bay - a wreck makes anchorage more to the E risky - this is the time of our first swim of the season. When Eric goes to check the holding of our anchor, we are lucky because it has a good grip in the sand, while here is much weed offering poor holding. The bay is mentioned as a good shelter in both pilots; and it's a charming and quiet place. On the top of the hills large windmills are turning quietly but according the pilots we'll have no worries about downhill gust. We go for dinner with Wil et Jeanine from the Windswept, to the only taverna serving meals this evening, nice gavros - these small fried fishes -, a greek salad - the choriatiki - and a tsaziki - yoghourt of cucumbers, garlic and olive oil. There are no other yachts but some tables are taken by Greeks and the owners of a camper have found here an ideal stop for the night.
